The core of the Morgan Industry has always been English oriented. Shows in the early 1900s were almost exclusively in hand, English pleasure and park, and harness classes. As interest in the breed expanded, so did the emphasis on various new divisions. Western pleasure became quite acceptable, especially in the west and southwest regions of the United States. Hunter, carriage, and dressage classes followed shortly thereafter. It wasn't until recently, however, that we saw a major change in attitude towards the non-English Morgan horses. Western, hunter, dressage and carriage divisions have seen tremendous growth in the last 10 years. The champions of these divisions are no longer viewed as those who couldn't make it in the English division but are now recognized as true Morgan elite in their own right.

The American Morgan Horse Association has assumed a position of total support for these new divisions and has been very helpful in the promotion of the Morgan Horse within these new venues.
The newest entry into the Morgan show world is the Reining Horse and with it came the inception of The National Morgan Reining Horse Association.

Our organization is dedicated to promoting and creating markets for the Morgan reining horse and to ensuring that the integrity of the Morgan reiner is maintained through its association with the NRHA.

We offer members a forum, through our newsletter, whereby their thoughts can be expressed to other Morgan reiners throughout the country.

We offer advertising capabilities through our newsletter and through group rates in The Morgan Horse Magazine.

As an NRHA affiliate, our club members are guaranteed access to the NRHA readership through the On The Rail columns in the NRHA's REINER magazine. Each month Morgan NRHA reining news is published in the NRHA publication.
In 1995, The National Morgan Reining Horse Association began a promotional drive to increase awareness within the Morgan Horse Industry of the Morgan Reining Horse. The enthusiasm for this discipline has been phenomenal. As an indicator of future growth we have only to look at the growth of the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) to realize that the potential is tremendous. The NRHA is an open breed organization which is recognized as the premier reining authority world wide. Being an NRHA Affiliate club allows Morgan ideas to be transferred to the NRHA in regards to promotion of the reining horse especially in non Quarter Horse areas.

The best modes of promotion are education and incentive. We run a monthly ad in the monthly Morgan Horse publication with club and reining news as well as our NMRHA Reiner newsletter. We sponsor reining classes at Morgan shows where NRHA judges have been hired. We have had a wonderful response to our monthly ad with inquiries looking for more information on how to get into reining. Our NMRHA Derby, a four year old event held at the World Show, has won great enthusiasm. 1997 was our first year and the Championship payout was over $2500. The Derby is sponsored by the NMRHA Sire & Dam program. Donated stallion breedings are sold at half price with the proceeds going to support the Derby. This program has great potential.
All in all we are looking forward to increased membership, participation and promotion of the Morgan reining horse in the years to come.
